Challenges

The City of Woodland decided to relocate Fire Station No. 1 to improve the emergency response time for the west side of the City.  The property chosen for the fire station encompassed multiple lots and was situated between existing residential and commercial buildings.  The key design feature of the fire house is the access to the adjacent city streets and upgrades to old infrastructure.  The fire trucks must be able to easily and quickly access the street and upon return be able to maneuver into the truck parking without affecting traffic and existing utilities must be maintained to serve the business district.

Solution

Laugenour and Meikle supplied surveying and civil engineering services including Lot Line elimination, utilities design, infrastructure rehabilitation of sewer main replacement without major interruptions to existing businesses, grading and drainage design.   Fire truck travel way was modeled to confirm that trucks can maneuver successfully.  Laugenour and Meikle also provided construction surveying to the contractor which allowed for well coordinated site work construction.

Outcome

A new fire house that meets the City of Woodland's needs and compliments the adjacent businesses.
